Forty-three high school students from across South Carolina spent a week in June in our nation's capital.  The rising high school seniors were selected by electric cooperatives from around the state.  The students joined more than 1,500 students from across the country June 13-18 in Washington, D.C.

While in Washington, the South Carolina group visited landmarks such as the White House, Arlington Cemetery, Mount Vernon, the Washington Monument and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.  Students also met with lawmakers at the Capitol.

During the trip, Sam Anderson, who represented York Electric Cooperative, was chosen as South Carolina's Youth Leadership Council delegate.  Sam will travel back to Washington in July for a leadership conference with delegates from across the nation.  Next February, Sam will represent South Carolina during the annual meeting of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association in Atlanta, Georgia.

Also during the trip, Brittnay Johnston, representing Palmetto Electric Cooperative, was chosen to receive a $2,500 college scholarship.  The scholarship honors R.D. Bennett, the first manager of The Electric Cooperatives of South Carolina, Inc.
