State House
The General Assembly crafts South Carolina state laws. South Carolina voters elect members of the General Assembly to represent their districts. The General Assembly consists of two bodies, the Senate and House of Representatives. The South Carolina Senate consists of 46 members elected to serve four-year terms. The 2011-2012 Senate is currently made up of 19 Democrats and 26 Republicans.* The House of Representatives consists of 124 members elected November 2, 2010, to serve until Monday after the General Election in November of 2012. The 2010-2011 House of Representatives is currently made up of 75 Republicans and 49 Democrats.
* There is a vacant seat in the South Carolina Senate left by Senator Mick Mulvaney's election to the 5th District Congressional seat.
How to reach your legislators
Letter writing is the most popular way to reach legislators. When writing your legislator, include the basics, namely, your purpose for writing. Address only one issue in a letter, and, if possible, keep the letter to one page. Include your full name and mailing address. Keep in mind to make your writing personal. Tell your legislators why you care about an issue, and why he or she should care.
